The College of Science / Department of Forensic Evidence organized a specialized scientific workshop entitled “Preserving the Crime Scene,” delivered by Lieutenant Colonel Haider Abdul Hamza Al-Fatlawi, with the attendance of a number of faculty members and students of the department.
The workshop aimed to highlight the critical importance of the crime scene as the primary source of forensic evidence, and to emphasize the necessity of following precise scientific procedures to preserve it in a manner that ensures the integrity of criminal investigations. The lecturer addressed the fundamental concepts related to crime scenes, their types, as well as the challenges that may face concerned authorities when dealing with them.
He also reviewed the practical steps that must be followed, starting with securing the incident site and preventing unauthorized access, passing through technical documentation using photography and sketching, and ending with the mechanisms of collecting and preserving evidence according to approved scientific methods to prevent damage or contamination. He further outlined the most common mistakes that may negatively affect the course of investigations.
The workshop witnessed positive engagement from attendees through questions and scientific discussions, which contributed to enriching the dialogue and enhancing the practical understanding of students, particularly through the presentation of real-life field examples.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants emphasized the importance of such scientific activities in developing the professional skills of forensic evidence students and enhancing their readiness to engage in specialized fields of work.
